out of the mouths….

This is fun. A letter from Ben Brown in Keller, Texas:

“My youngest son has taken a special liking to your music as well. His name is Christopher and he just turned six years old last month. While still five years old, a couple of months ago, he wrote what looked like a long letter with some repeated word strings in it. He is a beginning reader/writer, and spells many words phonetically – my wife and I could not figure out what he was trying to say and he wouldn’t tell us. I read it again and again and finally discovered that he had written out the lyrics (primarily the chorus) to “Europa and the Pirate Twins”. He was so excited when I figured it out! He loves that song – it is his favorite song. I wanted to let you know that you are touching, entertaining, and inspiring another generation of music lovers.”

That is so awesome! I have a similar story in that I inadvertently helped create one of the youngest Squeeze fans in the US. I gave my friend a few albums as a going away present a few years ago. Her now 8-year-old son knows half of their songs backwards and forwards and asks for them to always be on his iPod! It is just amazing to watch kids — who we all, on some level or another, underestimate — latch on to such wonderful, complex music. I imagine that’s the way my father felt when I enjoyed Weather Report and Paul Simon as a child (still do!). Thank you so much for sharing this.

What can I say – the kid has good taste! Reminded me of when some 8 year old boy noticed my XTC shirt and said, “Great band!”.

I played the ‘Science’ video for my son a year or so ago when he was in first grade. H loved it. He is in second grade now and is in the whacky science club at school. The class motto? you guessed it.. point your finger in the air and say ‘Science!!!’

Now, my wife on the other hand, after watching 3 songs of the Pink FLoyd Dark Side of the Moon show on TV a couple of weeks ago says to me “Hey, I know this song, who are these guys again?”

Out 8-yr-old still doesn’t know that we attended the show in Tucson a couple of years ago – he would be crushed that we didn’t bring him along.

    Next tour . . .

How wonderful is this! :) I’m compelled to tell you how it moved me: To see this child’s attempt to take something that went into his ears, and deeply moved him, and express it through his hands onto the paper with his pencil/instrument, struck a chord in me. He seems to want to “return it home”, or perhaps amplify the joy it brought him out towards others. “Hey, everyone! Look at this! Listen to this! It speaks to me!” Well, I recognized that feeling. It’s the feeling I get when I feel so strongly I want to make music to express the feelings, to capture that “good thing”, focus it, and share it with others. Or to draw or paint or write a poem. Like taking a photo of something fantastic, and bringing it back to show your friends after your vacation. Anyway, this made me feel sooooo good. Thank you Ben, and Thomas…for sharing. -Fredges

I was living near Keller Texas when I really got to love Thomas Dolby’s music.. My mother still lives in Roanoke. I couldn’t speak until I was about 6 or so, doctors tried to get me to talk, and when they finally got me to, they couldn’t get me to shut up :^) .. But I identify with “hyperactive”, because as a child I was hyperactive.. Bouncing off the walls, then I got big, and am wondering what happened to all that energy. It takes other forms. I remember when Keller had only a couple of shopping centers (a diamond {grocery store}, eckerd and some typical small town five and dimes). . Now it’s like a bunch of little malls everywhere, and gated communities, ranches, etc..
