found a rare pic from 81

This was from a gig at the Marquee around 1981. In the background to my left is Matthew Seligman on Moog bass, to my right is Glen Skinner, now quite a well-known producer who was DJing for us that night. On the screen is Lene Lovich, a shot from the Radio Silence video. If you’re thinking 1981 is a bit early to be using a PC onstage, you’re right–it’s the PPG 340/380 WavKomputor. The Roland is a JP8.

Ah, the Jupiter 8… my fave synth of all time. Had mine MIDI-retrofitted in London. In a fit of studio spring-cleaning during the nineties, I sold it (for a pittance) to make room for some shiny new digital gear and have been kicking myself ever since. Great pic, Thomas.

Wonderful pic. Is it true that “Henry” (the PPG) fell down a lift?

You were multi-media before the term existed! On-stage gear may have gotten more streamlined over the years, but I miss the days of the piles of gear and miles of cables snaking their way across the stage, to-and-from those magical (if temperamental) boxes of sound. You all seemed like wizards then. Fortunately, the song-writing has kept you in that category!

I’m proud to say that I’ve followed you the whole way TD. I got turned on to “The Golden Age of Wireless” in 1982 — and STILL have the album on vinyl! I think “The Flat Earth” was one of the best albums of the 1980′s; I think “Aliens Ate My Buick” was great fun and underrated; and “Astronauts & Heretics” was subtle and nuanced. I even have “Dolbys Cube” on vinyl still! And when I saw you play at The Metro in Chicago for the “Aliens…” tour, you did a back flip on stage.

Glad to see that you’re still having fun with technology TD!

Another vote for the Jupiter 8 – an underappreciated classic (although, sadly, nowhere near underappreciated enough for me to be able to afford one). I had a Midi’d one on loan from Roland for a few months (long story. Involves missiles and Kieran Prendeville) and as it was the first serious synth I’d ever had to play with, I didn’t realise quite how lovely it was. That arpeggiator…

(Did I learn the lead lines from most of TGAOW? You have to ask? Although I could never quite get Commercial Breakdown, I felt a bit better when I heard that teensy fluffette on Live Wireless)

I still have the Dolby’s Cube 12 inch with the snipped corners…very cool…

Now down to business, are there any New Sprout Album rumors fit to publish yet?

Great pic. Back in the white suit days, and hair on your head.
Don’t forget the tape head in the background.

I can help with some of this?

I have a feeling that bloke crouching at the back was Brian. He was great, whether I remember his name right or not, and was the sole roadie for the whole show which included keyboards, prototype music computer and all the audio visuals if I remember right!

But I am not at all sure that is me on your right Thomas? I think that is Kevin not just because he is playing the synth infront of him with two hands which is double what I usually used to use…but more significantly that is guitars onstage behind him….

So I think the story of this pic is probably that is me hidden nearside of the stage out of the picture, i.e. exactly where you are looking, and I have a good idea why!

thanks matthew, i will sleep easy tonight!!

Wow the old marquee in wardour street.
You must of played there a few times Thomas, a crowed of us borrowed a minibus and came to one of your shows there in late november 82. We all had a great night.

  12. madtheory says:

I was wondering about Kevin too, because that synth looks like a Roland Jupe 4, not a Moog. The Beatles had the same memory problems with the anthology, it’s human :)

Love love LOVE my Jupiter 6 – and I’m going to get the MIDI continuous controller enhancement known as . . . wait for it . . . Europa!

    I can hardly wait.

I was at this show. It’s actually one of Negativland’s early shows. The toasters and tape decks were off to the right just a hair. This evening was something special, as the band unveiled “A Big 10-8 Place” for the first time.

Smart muffins. Where all the sex chemicals burned up.

Certainly, I’m aware that the references may not resonate.

I was 15 years old when you were on this tour.I managed to get myself smuggled in to see you at a nightclub in Arbroath, (Smokies) whereupon I sang every lyric to match yours.TGAOW meant everything to me in those days & it Still Stands-Up.

The Curious thing though, Is how it still looks Modern?

I think I was at that gig too…. was it one of the series of four consecutive Monday nights ? I went to three of them but couldn’t do the fourth as it coincided with an evening shift ( I used to work as a computer operator for EMI ) and had run out of holiday days.

Those gigs stick in the memory as being so innovative and intimate. good days. Really looking forward to the new issues of TGAOW and TFE which still get heavy rotation on the iPod.

Possible idea for future blog : your band colleagues from the past… what are they upto now?

do you have any more pictures we can reminisce over ?
