new song feedback
I took the advice of a few blog readers and tweeters, and sent my new song to a handful of people to see what they thought. My friends are always supportive, but they tell it like it is, and don’t gush unless they really mean it. Here are some of the responses:

Ohhh myyy!
Thomas, I’m still dreaming. Seriously this song is more than WONDERFUL, is one of the best things I ever heard in all my life.
You’re dangerous, it’s so beautiful that I have cried a bit, your voice is more beautiful than ever. Even the sounds are really cool.
Thanks for sharing it, I promise I’ll never play it to anyone.
You music touches me in the very deep of my heart.
oh God Thomas that is really beautiful! SO lovely. I love stuff like that. It soars and takes you with it. It made my cry actually.
Well what a lovely song to wake up to.
Wow. That is masterful, haunting, and the tag line is piercing.
I have just listened to ****** about 10 times in a row. This is, in my opinion, the lushest, most beautifully melodic thing I think you’ve done….ever. No joke, no exaggeration. Perhaps I’m biased towards those chord and melody choices and the lush haunting timeless vibe, but…this is just EPIC. As in “tears-worthy”… I’d go on, but I have to go listen to it again.
This may be THE, or at least one of, my favorite things you have done.
Thank you again for sending (and surely embedded this track indelibly into my skull)…
I initially listened to this briefly and the melody really stuck in my head for hours thereafter. Wow, really lovely.
When you said you had another Screen Kiss you obviously generated a lot of expectations. This is going to floor people when it’s released.
It seems like it’s half a thing without an amazing visual element to
complete it. I’m sure you must be seeing visions.

(Ok, so I can’t please all the people all the time!)
Wow! lucky people to be honoured with a sneak preview!
It makes us lesser mortals very frustrated! and chomping at the bit to hear it too!
Can’t wait!
Thrilled to hear such positive reaction to your new material and that you’ve set the bar high for yourself! I eagerly anticipate hearing this song in the context of the rest of the album…

Very cool feedback. Sounds like a very lucky group of ears! I’m looking forward to hearing the music that’s inspired these comments!
Thomas the tease. Very positive feedback. Can’t wait for us lot to get a taste.
Congratulations, Thomas! It must be a wonderful feeling to get such good feedback. All your hours of work are paying off. We’re looking forward with great anticipation to hearing your new tunes… Thanks for sticking with it.
Gerry C.
It’s lovely to catch the spark of creativity! Can’t wait to get a listen to what you have created. Will it be released as a single, or part of a collection? Could we get a listen here before all the rest of the world? (lol)
Wow! I can’t wait to hear it. I’ve been a fan of yours for a while and just recently started following this blog, it’s great! I’m so excited your up to a new album and can’t wait for the re-releases!!
Boy, talk about a cool mailing list to be on. Can’t WAIT to listen when it’s released.
someone said “screen kiss”. not i can’t wait to hear it. anything wrong about posting :30 for us loyals? loving the “behind the music” sneak peeks, btw.
Can you at least tell us the name of the song, so we can look out for it when it’s finally released?
Thanks.
Dear Thomas,
“When you said you had another Screen Kiss…”
Considering Screen Kiss is my favourite song of yours, my anticipation has definitely just gone up a notch.
I can’t wait for the new album.
Any rough idea when it will come out?
Darren
That lifeboat, seaview panorama combo must be truly inspiring you sir.
‘little rivers of anticipation are running down my inseam’ also!
I remember seriously falling in love in 1985 and playing just “I Scare Myself” over and over for like 3 weeks – try doing that with any other song and it would drive you crazy
In the interests of good empirical practices should the sample audience not now be expanded to provide a more conclusive result? Only in the interests of science you understand.
It might also be nice to let the fans who have supported you through thick, but mainly thin, share in your excitement by giving them something more than a carrot. Like we need carrots!
SCIENCE!
TMDR, you must be the biggest tease in pop. C’mon, give us a snippet. How are you planning to distribute the new album, anyway? Has that been determined? Maybe not too late for a “pay what you want” internet distribution a la Radiohead…?
Regards,
John
Well that is something to look forward too – and its cool that you are really getting off on recording again – because i know you have had many adventures in cyberspace but being truthful its the music i have missed. Re your twitter on the 2 4 tracks you wanted to include on – am guessing the Flat Earth reissue – the one you don’t use – could you post it – cos you know we wanna here it. Peace – and what a cool cool boat you have!
Garax
expectations++;
Keep it up Thomas.
Hm. How about posting it here as a 64kbps mono track, so we can cast judgement as well?
PS Thanks for making some of the best music of the last 30 years. (Long-time reader, longer-time listener, first-time commenter)
Hello Thomas… I would LOVE to be a part of your inner circle, and would LOVE to hear just a few notes of your new creation… as I’ve been a great fan of yours since the 80′s, and have seen you in MONTREAL, my hometown and will also be seeing you again in MONTREAL in july at cafe campus when you tour. Now, if I can’t get a sneak peak as other diehard fans have… I’d like to ask if you’ll be sharing your song with us Montrealers in JULY, in which case I will wait with bated breath, until I see you perform again…
BUT, if you could send me a snippit, I’D LOVE IT… a deep dark fan of Thomas Dolby… since I first heard the first notes… when I was still in my twenties
I promise that I will be the only to hear it… it will never go beyond these walls… your biggest fan, to me there is only one Thomas Dolby… the best of the best
Oh to be in the inner circle. the velvet rope always seems to stop right ahead of me.
But hearing the rest of you write about this is still pretty cool. I bet some of those lucky people can’t say they were lucky enough to have met you, and get you to sign their vinyl!
Me and my son want to hear this NOW!!
AARRRGGHH
My son loves Dolby, and from the age of 0, he has been brought up with his music.
Please let us hear a 30s demo, a bit of the course even!
PS: I think this positive reaction to the song may inspire furthur brilliance, and I can’t wait to hear your lyrics now that you have an ‘older’ perspective on life.
This is sounding very promising indeed. I’m not going to beg for a 30 second snippet, as those can sometimes leave you with no better idea of the song as a whole than without hearing it in the first place (especially at low quality bit rates).
What I would like to see is a blog entry detailing what artists have inspired you this time around (new and old). I think that would give us a good idea of ‘where you are’ right now, and what we might be able to imagine your album sounding like.
Keep up the excellent blog Mr D.
I just found your blog and am so glad you hear that you are writing music again that will be released. I missed your last tour even though I lived in so cal at the time.. and was extremely disappointed. I was about 12 when the golden age of wireless came out and was immediately smitten with one of our submarines and windpower. I desperately wanted a synth (sweet young thing that I was I thought all those great sounds came out of 1 synth) and I loved the suits and spectacles. I’m now almost 40 the mom of two and sitting here at the moment surrounded by my little makeshift home studio consisting of a mac, softsynths (been fiddling with omnisphere wheew), and a few hardware pieces not the least of which is due to your influence (along with peter gabriel, kate bush, vince clark, and depeche mode).
How ironic that this message was posted to you by a wireless transmission. Golden age of wireless indeed! Can’t wait to hear the new song and truly hope to catch next time around.
any sign of a new tour????
waiting for a response
m.
Oh man, I can’t wait to hear this new material. With new music coming out from you AND Devo later this year it is certainly an awesome time for interesting music again! Good luck with the rest of the album, Thomas!
No! No! No! Please no 30 second snippets! Who would want to see only a small corner of a great masterpiece? Fine music should be like a fine painting or bottle of wine – enjoyed in its entirety.
I’m sure it will be well worth the wait – but don’t let too much praise go to your head Thomas
Now, where’s that bottle of wine …
WANT IT!!! WANT IT NOW!!!!!!!!!
