house guests
Matthew Seligman and Kevin Armstrong came to stay with me for a few days, and we routined some of my new songs.
They sound AMAZING. What a delight to play with old friends. We understand each other so well. And they’ve both kept their chops up over the years, ever since the early days of Local Heroes, Low Noise, and my first and second albums.
When they came onstage with me at the Islington Academy last October, it felt like a reunion. The reaction was so warm and positive, it took me quite by surprise. I’ve played with many backing bands over the years but these two have a unique place in Dolby folklore. We worked over 5 songs and we’re planning to record three of them in early September, with a drummer (as yet undecided.)
Here’s a couple of neat pics of them from the Academy (thanks elekgtricgypsy!) Kevin’s in the specs.

WOWIE ZOWIE! Kevin and Matthew on the new album?!?! That is fantastic news, Thomas! I’m thrilled that the people who helped make your early work so memorable will be back in the mix.
As musicians, we’re always at our best when working with people we trust.
Awesome!

I couldn’t make it to the Islington gig… and I’ve been kicking myself ever since I found out that Kevin and Matthew joined you on stage there.
This is wonderful news! I can’t wait to hear the results.
Cheers,
Darren.
.. and Lene Lovich was on stage there as well. It was like ‘Live Wireless 2007′.
What a excellent way to start the day!
When I asked Kevin at Islington whether he thought you would be working together again he said ‘it would be nice to be asked’… It looks like the heavens are aligning!
I wonder what Justin Hildreth is up to these days. It would be GAOW revisited.
Exciting news!!!
Thanks, as always, for the info,
Jon
Fantastic news.
Great to be with people that you know and trust.
After being at the Islington gig last year it was obvious you were having a brilliant time with old mates. I’m sure they will bring a little extra magic to your music.
What great news! What a fantastic time I think we all had at the Islington gig and its so exciting to hear you are working together again. Great to hear that the recordings are scheduled in too now. Does this mean the boat is to be launched (not literally) soon?
As Dolby fans we must really wonder if we have ever had it so good…
Cheers,
Andrew
Now that I’m playing drums again, I’ll be happy to sit in on the new album. Okay, I’m not really good enough for that but I can still hold my own!
I’m excited to hear the new stuff and playing with old friends is always a comfort. Since I started playing again I hooked up with some buddies from the “old days” and we played seamlessly together as if no time had ever passed. It was fun. I’ll never been good enough to go professional but the pure joy of playing with friends is not something you soon forget. Sort of like “riding a bicycle”.
Cheers!
Brian
Very, very, very cool! Do you think you’ll take video of any of your rehearsal/recording sessions? Tiny snippets as a Podcast? Make people faint from anticipation at the sound of microbursts of new melodies?
Oh, to be a fly on the studio wall!
Have fun!
whoa !! awesome news ! my anticipation for the new music has been jacked up a few notches . isn’t it funny how life is a circle sometimes .
I loved Matthew’s work on your albums, Thomas, so hearing he’ll be on the new stuff is just more gravy.
As synchronicity would have it, the members of my ancient garage band are reforming for a Labor Day assault on the locals. It all started with an email out of the blue: “Hey, wanna’ jam?” Old friends all of us, with years of (admittedly obscure) musical history between us, gearing up once again. Sound familiar?
One small problem..I have to reteach my fingers to play La Villa Strangiato…incoming blisters!
Very nice to read that you record new songs with those two..
and here´s a drummer that can do wonders…

>>record 3 of them in early September
Does this mean the alternative power solution is installed and operating at lifeboat studio? This technerd is looking forward to the details.
“we’re planning to record three of them in early September, with a drummer (as yet undecided.)”
I’ve been trying to contact you about looking at my Music collaboration website (http://www.tunerooms.com). When I saw this on the blog I thought I’d give it a shot this way.
I had thought you might be interested in the site as both a musician and possible adviser. I obviously think what we are doing is pretty cool, but would love to hear what you think and maybe use us to find a drummer!
Matt
And speaking of old collaborative partners, is there indeed something brewing on the Paddy McAloon front? A new Dolby and Sprout album within a year of each other would indicate that my karma is incredibly good.
