Hurdles?

The haulage is all set up. Three separate haulage companies to bring the boat from Berkshire to Suffolk, plus a company bringing eight antique creosote-treated oak railroad sleepers (‘ties’ in the US) to use as a base for the boat.

A few possible risks involved in moving the lifeboat:

1. When the crane lifts her, she buckles and breaks her back.

2. The lowloader (articulated truck/trailer) can’t make it around the tight corners on the country lanes leading to our village.

3. Small bridge leading to village crumples under weight.

4. Low hanging electrical cables slice off my precious wheelhouse.

5. 60 ton crane can’t get good enough access to my garden, therefore does not have appropriate purchase to lift 10 ton boat into garden.

6. Sky falls.

It’s going to be a stressful few days! I am distracting myself by editing movie footage from the Sputnik concert at the ICA. Perhaps when it’s done I’ll put up a podcast or something.

Here’s a pic of the saloon.

Tom–good luck with the old girl…I sense your passion for this project. Remember: intuitive improvisation is the secret of genius.

I hope that the boat makes its journey safely! No 6 lane expressways to get the boat to its new home?? Gee, can’t imagine why you’d want to bug out of California for a while… : )

Looks like there’s alot of work ahead…

Thanks for teasing us with the possibility of a new Poadcast. Hope we can see/hear the collaborative piece you did with Merujo for the ICA gig!

Do I detect a little bit of excitement? ;-)

It’s great to here you so upbeat about this wonderful project. I have a feeling that there will be plenty of inspiration coming out of this… not to mention perspiration!

Good luck with those tight corners!

    Cheers,
    Jon

    Thomas,
Don’t worry it will be fine, as long as you keep the men supplied with tea.
But seriously if you do hit any snags theres always a way round them.

    Has she a Name?

    Regards
    Lindon

  5. TMDR says:

Among her several former names were (a) Queen Anne Lifeboat (b) Quest. Neither of those work for me so though it is considered by some to be bad luck to change a boat’s name, I feel that, as her saviour (I hope!) I earn the right to rename her. A couple are bobbing round my head right now but I intend that there will be a formal naming ceremony once she is ‘in situ.’

the best of luck with the adventures!!

Good luck with the move, Thomas! Hopefully, you’ll have good weather for the transfer.

And it would be very cool, indeed to see a podcast from the ICA concert – keep distracting yourself! ;)

    Your project sounds amazing.

I love that you’re taking us all on the journey with you.

This is worthy of a TV documentary, I really hope you get the moving of your Lifeboat on video.

Do you have any plans to record the building of your Lifeboat studio and making of your new music?

I caught your interview on BBC Radio 2’s ‘Music club’ with Simon Mayo. Great stuff! I hope you get more airplay with the ‘The Sole Inhabitant’ CD/DVD package.

Great to see you back on the blog

P.S. How much IS it to hire a Chinook helicopter!!?

  9. MiniCoopGuy says:

Is that a wood burning stove I see in the saloon? I guess you have to heat is somehow, but I never guessed it would have a wood burning stove.

So I guess you’ve merged your ‘recording hut’ idea with your
‘sail around the world and record with various interesting people’
ideas, hmmm, Thomas? Cool!! :D You awesome visionary, you.
And ya know, with regards to potential hurdle #4, I think/like to hope that the wheelhouse is more likely to shear through the electrical wires, not vice versa! Suddenly, the power goes
out…the electric kettle stops boiling…much colorful language is
heard…the power company guys arrive, and one asks, “‘Ow the
‘ell did *this* ‘appen?” And somebody says, “Ask HIM!!!” ;)
[overheard a few minutes later: "'Oo the 'ell puts a bl%%dy
boat in his garden??!??" :P ]

Peace and comedy and smooth sailing on both land and water for
you and your not-yet-named classic bateau,

Kara, hearing “Sailing”, by Christopher Cross, in my head…

I think that this is a great idea for a studio. I often thought a tree house would be a good place for a studio, but a boat, yeah I can really see that. I’m really interested in the idea of being able to use locations as an influence for creativity and whilst having a single location is great, the idea of having your studio with you wherever you are appeals even more.

As you seem to do a fair bit of travelling maybe you should look into using mobile music applications (stuff like Bhajis Loops, Griff, and miniMusic applications) so you can capture ideas wherever you are whenever without long boot up times etc.

Anyway, best of luck with the boat and thanks for posting on your project.
