Up with the larks!

I’m off to Boston, Ma. at 4am tomorrow (ugh!) for three gigs in the area followed by one at the Canal Room in NYC on Friday night. Hoping to make up for the unfortunate exclusion of the Boston area from my Spring dates. Also looking forward to playing the Berklee School of Music performance venue, and doing a clinic for their students during the day on Thursday. For anyone that’s coming to one of the four gigs this week, you’ll get to see pretty much the same show as I played earlier in the year. I’ve added in one fun song from ‘Aliens Ate My Buick.’ I’d like to have played some brand new songs but I’ve been busy with post production on my live DVD that will be out in early November and not had time to work them into the set.

I did an interview with a radio station there this week–you can link to it here:

It was late in the evening and I was waffling a bit (polite British term meaning, I was talking out my ass!) but there’s a killer remix of ‘Airhead’ included which I’d forgotten all about. Was I involved in that or did someone do it without permission? Maybe someone can enlighten me. Either way it’s great.

Great interview, TMDR! I’m glad that this guy let you have you say about your shows, background and interests. There was little waffling, by my estimation. It just came across as relaxed…

Yeah, it was fun to hear that ‘Airhead’ remix. Been a while! I believe that was on a 12-inch with 2 or 3 different mixes (with the pretty pink Karman Ghia on the cover). I do prefer the mix with the great horn section closer. I alwys wished that that ending had made it on the album version. Even more fun was hearing the ‘Submarines’ live cut. Gave me a bit of a taste of the shows I missed in the Spring.

Will have to jump into the interview this afternoon.

    Trust Boston will go smashingly.

    .

  3. Have fun Mr Dolby. Always wanted to visit Boston myself, don’t envy you being up at 4am though!

Fab interview, doesn’t matter if you waffled, at least you’re always polite and courteous in interviews. An entertaining remix, really enjoyed it!

    Take care

Well, it’s hard to say this to you, but what the heck are U still doin’ in the US of A. If you want to continue your music carrier and go back on stage and the audience, Europe is the answer to you. It seems like you are stuck there for some private reason, in the place where the crowd cheers crap music and you are bound playing like some Bozo in small clubs. Europe needs you and Europe knows, respect and remembers you. One thing is to make money on cell phones and other is beeing an artist that left big stamp on EU culture and music. It is actually sad to see you doing stuff there on the level you are doing it. I dont feel competent criticizing you but I had to. Love!

    Hey Joe-

It’s not the size of club that matters, it’s the level or appreciation you get in the club. Thomas is getting GREAT feedback from alot of VERY happy fans in the U.S. that have stuck with him for years. Does loving his music make our taste more ‘European’ or just good? Get off your pedestal…

  9. Mark Gardner says:

It’s hard to lose a valued performer to a new stage.

    That’s what happened with Tom.

Europe didn’t value him enough back in the 80′s and he suffered for it.

How, he’s got a secure base and can pick and choose his venues. I bet all artists would love that.

This guy has got to follow his own route. He’s doing it well. I judge, from the posts in the forum.

Your reply wasn’t disrespectful, but it left a lot of forum members wondering where you were coming from.

Please come in and properly explain to them.

“Stuck there for some private reason”?

You mean wife, kids, business and home? Come on man!

Factually legimate comment aside, surely it’s a matter of logistics and finances. In any event, the guy is back, playing live and making music. That’s more than most people, and even he, thought judging by his comments on the old Flat Earth site a few years back.

  11. Joe says:

Oh, whatever… I was just beeing EU selfish… one can say it. But it’s not true that he didn’t get any respect in EU, faraway from that. Anyway now I’m sorry I made comment like that…. I feel like beein so F’n selfish. So please forgive me.
Love to YA all and deep respect to Mr. Dolby and all cool people around him.

    “Screen Kiss” to Ya all!
    Joe.

Just wanted to let you know that I’ve been investigating a couple
of the musicians you mentioned in your last [Massachusetts] radio
interview. I am LOVING the Magnet {aka Even Johansen, as I found out}–how utterly gorgeous!!! GAWD how I love acoustic
guitar, and what he does with it…I set up an Apple Store account today so I could get my ears on Mr. Johansen’s albums–and any and all of your own future releases! :)

Thanks for opening up about the very selective contents of your
iPod, and for opening my mind a little too. Crrrreeeeeeak. ;)

Love and the eternal search for amazing music,
    Kara :)
