From a review of The Wall: Live in Berlin

“Lauper appeared early on, wearing a naughty school girl uniform to take on “Another Brick In The Wall, Pt. 2.” Her idiosyncratic vocals sound a little over the top at times, and may not have been the best fit for this song, but her character was perfect for the show. Thomas Dolby joined her midway, and his strange appearance made everything else look comparatively normal.”

Strange Appearance? This is theatre! You’ve got to establish your character, right? In front of 350,000 people, you need to do whatever it takes to visually set yourself apart… Well, reviewers always seem to find something, no matter how insignificant or irrelevant, to nitpick about.

That’s an awful thing to say about both these artists. The show is supposed to be quirky at best, so I’m sure they were both well suited for it. It’s easy to critique others work when you’re not the one on stage in front of throng of spectators.

You guys missed my point–I was DELIGHTED that my appearance made everything else at that show seem normal :)

  4. stevied says:

Thats awesome whenyou can somehow make everything else seem normal. Speaking of normal, Just got the new Art of noise Box settoday, Damn, they are Great. have you ever had any involvement with them Thomas??

  5. mizmusic says:

    RIGHT ON, Thomas!!!!! High five!!! Normal is boring. {grin}
    You gotta be you. :)

I thought that was a great review. Glad you had the right attitude about what the reviewer said TMDR.

Looking forward to the DVD and CD.

I see what you mean. I’m just not used to reading such a scathing review. Are critics really that terrible? I guess you have to laugh it off and keep stepping — make something positive out of the negative. : )

    LOL!!

See, Thomas did Cyndi a big favor that night, whether she knows it or not.

  9. BeechwoodAve says:

Your performances could never be seriously accused of normalcy, Thomas! Keep that flame of your idiosyncracies burning bright!!

Aw heck, I can’t think of a better performance/event to let your freak flag fly!

I am a little ashamed to admit, I’ve never seen this performance of The Wall. I’ve only seen the Alan Parker movie (and that was at a shopping mall movie theater in suburban Minneapolis, at midnight, and possibly in some sort of altered state. Ahem.) I need to rent the DVD of Berlin. Maybe if I watch it with the eyepatch over the good eye, it will enhance the surreal nature of the extravaganza… ;-)

Stranger performance experience: The Wall/Berlin or the Exotic-Erotic Ball/NYC?

Thomas Dolby appeared on a Japanese pop show in the 80s, and his strange appearance sporting sock suspenders made his appearance on ‘the Wall’ look comparatively normal.” ;-)

I guess it’s good to embrace our weirdicities … from it them creativity lies!

  13. korky123 says:

Sorry, I was tongue-tied for a brief moment. What I am trying to say that weirdicities are a good thing … for without them there wouldn’t be creativity! Okay, now I’ve said it correctly! :)

  15. I’ll second that HollyG!

A great compliment as far as I’m concerned by the reviewer!

  16. Schlimmer says:

Most people who saw the show told me that it was a desaster.
Well, they saw the show. But they didn’t hear it. The reason is, that most of the delay towers didn’t work. The staff needed hours to solve the problem. And that was after the show had started…
So there are 2 versions: The official one, saying it was a huge success and the other one, saying it possibly may have been a great thing, but only if you was staying close to the stage.

Besides that: I missed it and I guess it was the last chance to see Thomas live in Germany. Too bad.

  17. proy1 says:

I’m glad you got my point in my review Thomas. Your “strange” character and performance where one of the best things in the the show. What a coincedence – I’m going to see Roger Waters in concert tonight!
