Crackers and my AZ-1
This is Crackers, a brilliant and totally demented artist/musician/visionary in Hamilton, Ontario seen here playing my Casio AZ-1 that he bought off eBay a couple of years ago. Crackers makes great online comics, and he also once recorded an astonishing cover of ‘Hot Sauce’ sounding like it was played by a bunch of old codgers out in the Bayou. This shot is from a gig his band Science Ninja Big Ten played recently supporting A Flock Of Seagulls.

I still haven’t gotten around to fixing the sustain button on it either. ^_^
Gotta say I’m loving your AZ-1. It runs forever on batteries (I’m still using the same batteries I have had in it since the show with Carole Pope back in January), has enough weight to let you know it’s there but not so much that it bogs you down.
Your old keyboard is being well loved. Well loved indeed.
And if anyone would like to see more photos of Thomas’s AZ-1 in action we’ve got them up right here.
Crackers, I wish you were able to come to one of my gigs. (Family obligations in Western Canada huh, what kind of shit is that?) I’d love to see Science Ninja Big Ten some day too. From the pics it looks like three of your band are…. well, from Hamilton Ontario, while you are from some other planet altogether, maybe Planet Devo’s third moon Brucis Woollius?
I know man, I know. I did a Chinese Darth Vader “Do Not Want” yell when I found out I’d be in BC for your show on the 6th. I’m holding out hope that I’ll find a way to make it to one of the other shows when I get back, possibly the one on the 13th. I’ll have to see if there’s a bus or something that will get me there and back again. It’s near Detroit, right? That can’t be more than a few hours drive from Hamilton. Maybe I can talk one of the Ninjas that drive into driving me there if I cover gas and concert tickets.
Perhaps when you get back from England you’ll have a Toronto date lined up (hint! hint! to any Toronto club owners looking to book an act) or dare I hope Hamilton?
And here’s a higher resolution crop taken from the original pic of the Dolby AZ-1 in action if you’d like to replace the blocky resized one. Clickety click
Gentlemen, thank you for posting the fun exchange. Thomas, may I make a concert tour-film for you? It’s May Day so I’m going to presume some potential for magic. But I won’t presume anything else — merely that it’s a beautiful thing you’re doing, and people love it, and to have a feature film of it all would be glorious. I’m primed, professional, ready. There’s a 45 of Leipzig sitting right here. I care. And I know the geography. You’d get final cut. I simply want for this to exist, which is why I’m willing to risk Blog-Wrath for it. (Other channels yielded no returns, and time is of the essence.) If you’re not keen, the matter is dropped, however if you are, SAY! — for it will be wonderful. Cheers to Crackers, cheers to Dolby, and echoing into a mesmerizing decay: “So-o-o-ole In-ha-a-abi-i-ita-a-a-ant tou-u-ur-fi-i-i-i-ilm!…”
Crackers, I came by to make a comment on the Jesus reference in the cartoon. So wrong, yet so funny. Word. And while not from Hamilton, I have spent my share of time in Brantford. More word.

fuckin hell CRACKERS I think you’ve got my old MUSTANG there as well……that’s exactly what I worked out born to be wild on….a creamy off-white mustang although even at the age of 15 I think I strung it a bit more PROUDLY than that!
[...] Crackers, as you may recall from my blog on April 30th ‘06, is the new owner of my Casio AZ-1 wearable MIDI keyboard. I dug up this pic for him of me playing the synth at the Lhasa Club, Hollywood in 1988. Crackers being the whiz that he is came up with the commie motif, I suggested some tweaks and wa-la. A fine piece of poster art! [...]
