West Leg Complete!
The west leg of the Soul Inhabitant Tour came to a smashing end at the Fenix Underground in Seattle, WA on April 22nd. What a show! It was the first show where I could see both the stage and the video screens, but by the time Thomas took to the stage the room was SO packed that I could only choose to see him, or the screen between all the bodies lined up in front of my merchandising case. I opted for the screen, as I had not seen all the wonderful video magic worked by Johnny and content filmed by Brian. I didn’t even know there was a seperate small projector designed to throw video on Thomas himself!
It was obvious that this was one terrific show. The crowd was intense and very into hearing the music. There were several small scuffles near my merchandise display and the bar where fans chided others for talking to loud, sometimes politely, sometimes absolutely not. With a start time of 10:45, the crowd had plenty of time to enjoy drinks, which made for a rowdy atmosphere at times. But Thomas was clearly enjoying himself, skating around a glitch during “Submarines” by adding it to the encore later on. I nearly sold out of many sizes of shirts I had with me, and was kept on my feet all night talking to his fans who came by to see me and my wares.
We had a small decompression party back at the hotel, celebrating the end of the leg with a bottle of champagne provided by Johnny and his lovely girlfriend, who has been a great help to me behind the merch table when things get really hopping. They are now off on a cross country drive to New York, complete with some very much deserved vacation days along the way. The crew has started moving east as well, and I hope they get all the sleep they so richly deserve by not having to drive all day and THEN go to work on top of that for a show. Thomas is back home in California, and I am back in Oregon. It’s so quiet! I miss everyone already! But the cats are very happy to see me, and I will have a little time to catch up on errands, bills, my glass work, and sleep.
See you in NYC!
p.s. Happy Birthday, Johnny!
we want shirts….we want shirts…we want shirts!!!!
Just found out about the new tour date at Station 4 in Minneapolis on May 21! But there is a surprise! Station 4 is not in Minneapolis, but in St. Paul! (No…they are not the same thing.) I am guessing that some people will have difficulty buying tickets in a city where the venue does not exist? Correction please.
Thank you Mr. Dolby for coming back to my town! Cheers!
Absolutely an excellent show, thanks to EVERYONE who was a part of it.
Enjoy the short break, and hurry back to So. Cal.
Thank you Mr. Dolby! My brother and I could not stop smiling through the entire show, and for hours afterwards. The way you dealt with the glitches and the horrid thumping from the club below was graceful and impressive. I can’t even expalin the joy I felt seeing you play live after all these years!! Thank you again. Peace, -fredges
The crowd mix was interesting – the scuffle next to me at the start of the show was when some 20something pushed in front of some 30something like it was a 90s mosh pit. The 20something got bumped into a pile of 40somethings and things heated up momentarly before everyone realised that nobody was angry enough to throw a punch.
The show was way above what I was expecting. Watching the songs get built piece by piece was worth writing home about. My only wish while watching this was for Thomas to commentate as he was adding in song elements.
The projector throwing images on his face was very 80s video, I loved it. The video screen added interest, especially when it showed images from the headphone cam.
To attend this show I had to explain to my Californian wife who Thomas Dolby was, why I had an irrational love of ‘Europa and the Pirate Twins’ and why I was dragging her to see some old geezer play his glorified casio keyboard all night. But she loved it and danced her way through the concert.
I was disappointed when Thomas skipped Submarines but that all disappeared in the encore when it surfaced. I’d been reading the blog since the start of the month as was looking forward to it since he posted about the song. It was worth waiting for.
The highlight of the show for me was Airhead. I love that beat. An uptempo way to end the night. We went home grinning. Thanks a lot to Thomas and the crew.
Mr. Dolby really poured his heart and creativity into this tour, and the results were just inspired magic. He is my sound sculpting hero as well as a wonderfully creative, visionarily-quirky songwriter, and to see him in such an intimate venue and in such stunning visual surroundings was an experience to remember. It was nice to be a fan again — it’s been a long time since anything live has inspired me. It was also nice to meet you after the show, Thomas, although in that capacity I hate being a fan (being that I am pursuing a music career of my own, yadayadayada). But how could I not ask you to sign such a beautiful poster?! Yeowwwwwww. That baby’s getting framed.
